Full width version is up on our youtube channel if you prefer! One of the most common questions I get about how to play mahjong is how to choose a line (or hand) on the NMJL card. If you’ve ever felt stuck staring at the card after the deal, this video is for you. My approach is simple: don’t commit to a line right away. Instead of choosing a specific hand immediately after the deal, I start by choosing a section of the card that fits the tiles I’ve been given. Mahjong is all about pattern recog

But what if I don’t have three tiles that I want to get rid of during that pass? For the first left or second right of our Charleston, we have the ability to do a blind pass. This is our series going over the questions and answers section of this year’s NMJL newsletter, which clarifies Mahjong rules and frequently asked questions. Question number three: please clarify, can a joker be used in the consecutive run 112345? This question is essentially asking if a joker can be used in runs of non-identical tiles or in grouping of non-identical tiles such as NEWS or 2025. Here’s what the league says: you may not use a joker in the run 112345. This is a grouping of singles

Welcome to Episode 4 of our complete beginner’s mahjong lessons, Mahj 101. Let’s learn how to set up a Mahjong table for a game and how to deal the tiles in American Mahjong. Back to our series on the NMJL‘s newsletter question and answer section. We are clarifying exactly how these questions get played out in live gameplay. Here’s the question from the newsletter: Q. Please tell me if this is done correctly, Debbie is playing a quint hand. The player to the left of Debbie discards a 7 crak. Debbie calls the 7 crak. Debbie exposes on her rack: 77JJ, only four tiles. Debbie then steals a Joker from the player to her right. Debbie places the Joker with her four tiles:

In this new series, we are talking through the question and answer section from the 2026 National Mah Jongg League newsletter. I think these questions are super helpful to go through each year because they tend to be questions that are very frequently asked or very specific in clarifying rules. As a visual learner, I always think it’s helpful to see these questions and answers in action so that’s what we’ll be doing in these next five videos. I’m also sharing some great resources for improving
