The Secret War for Afghan Oil

For 20 years, the war in Afghanistan was often justified not only as a counterterrorism mission, but as a commitment to rebuilding the country and advancing women’s rights. After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, millions of girls returned to school, women entered universities and parliament, and shelters and legal protections for survivors of abuse expanded. By 2020, women held about 27% of parliamentary seats, and maternal mortality had significantly declined compared to the late 1990s. When U.
