In this custom home, the goal was to create higher ceilings in the great room without raising the overall roof height. The solution was a stepped floor. By dropping the great room floor approximately seven inches below the kitchen and dining area, we were able to achieve the added ceiling height the homeowner wanted while maintaining the exterior massing of the home. Structurally, this was accomplished by using deeper joists below the sunken space and tighter, double Microllam members at twelve
