In 1876, America faced the wildest election in its history. Samuel Tilden won the popular vote and was just one electoral vote away from the presidency — but four states sent in two different sets of results. Months of chaos followed, with both sides accusing each other of fraud. In the end, a special commission voted 8 to 7 along party lines, handing the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes.
