May 1980, Love Canal activist, community organizer, and mother Lois Gibbs appeared on Buffalo’s Channel 4 alongside anchor John Beard and reporter Marie Rice. Rice joined WBEN-TV (now WIVB) in 1977 and was among the first broadcast journalists to cover the developing Love Canal crisis—when residents were simply trying to understand the mysterious chemical ooze seeping into their basements. She went on to have a distinguished career, retiring in 2004 after 27 years with the station. #BuffaloBroad
