High winds have caused disruption across Northern Ireland going into the weekend - with some roads closed by fallen trees and winds up to 70mph expected on Sunday.

Yellow warnings for wind and rain have been issued for Sunday, with weather conditions expected to improve slightly from Monday, the forecaster said.

A yellow alert for wind also came into force between 3am and 6am for Northern Ireland, while a second warning covering much of Britain came into effect three hours later and was set to last until 6pm, with the Met Office warning of “very strong winds” of up to 70mph.

A fresh amber weather warning for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Office - with much of the UK already on alert for high winds and showers. Northern Ireland, Scotland and the UK's west coast and the Midlands have yellow warnings for wind on Sunday - meaning the possibility of transport delays and short-term power cuts.

Flood water could cause ‘a danger to life’ in places where it is fast flowing, the Met Office warned. Winds could blow at gusts of up to 70mph in exposed areas along the Irish Sea coastlines, Scottish Islands and other high-ground areas further inland, Met Office warned.

The UK continues to battle heavy rain and flood warnings, with over 100 alerts in place. South and Mid-Wales, the South West, and parts of the Midlands remain at high risk of flooding. The Met Office warns of further showers and falling temperatures,

The wet and windy conditions began to arrive in the early hours of Sunday morning, with two yellow weather warnings for wind in place for parts of the UK.

The warning will come into effect between 3.00am and 3.00pm. The Met Office says southerly winds are expected to peak late morning to early afternoon with gusts of 50-60mph, and perhaps as much as 70mph on the exposed Irish Sea coastline and some other areas of high ground.
