Formula One may be high tech and increasingly safety-minded, but bad weather, split-second mistakes, and mechanical failures have ended in catastrophe.
Sauber team principal Jonathan Wheatley was full of praise for the safety standards in Formula 1 after Gabriel Bortoleto walked away from a huge crash at the end of the Sprint at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
At 211 miles per hour, Bortoleto's car slammed into the wall, briefly lifting into the air before crashing down heavily. The car's sensors recorded an impact of 34G on the first hit and 57G on the second.
