The Manitoulin, a 663-foot vessel, remained stuck just offshore of Buffalo, New York for the second day on Thursday. An ice-cutting barge, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay, was dispatched earlier today to help free the freighter from the snow and ice field.

The freighter vessel was delivering rock salt to the Buffalo waterfront before it got stuck in a field of Lake Erie ice.

A Coast Guard ice-breaking tugboat is on the way and there are no concerns for the well-being of the 17 members of the Manitoulin's crew.

The new rule is part of a law passed back in 2019, called Brianna's Law, which is named after an 11-year-old Long Island girl who died in a boating accident in 2005.

The Coast Guard suspended ice-cutting operations for the night after making some progress and moving the ship slightly Thursday evening.
