MILWAUKEE (AP) — The “top levels of government” were involved in bringing charges against a Wisconsin judge accused of helping a Mexican immigrant evade federal authorities, her defense attorney told jurors during closing arguments at her trial Thursday in an attempt to blunt prosecutors’ arguments that the judge acted inappropriately.

To convict Dugan, the jury's vote must be unanimous. Given the massive publicity, both sides agreed to send out a high number of questionnaires for prospective jurors to answer. Initially, 120 went out, and then another 50. For comparison, usually about 50 go out in a case.
The Milwaukee judge was charged with obstructing federal immigration agents, who were trying to arrest a man who had appeared before her on a battery charge.
