LONDON (AP) — Britain's Conservative Party, which governed the country from 2010 until it suffered its worst-ever electoral defeat two years ago, was plunged into fresh turmoil Thursday after its leader sacked the man widely seen as her greatest rival for apparently plotting to defect to a rival right-wing party.

Three former ministers from the Conservative Party have joined the far-right party in recent weeks, which currently leads in the polls. Since 2024, around 20 elected officials and former Tories have defected to the anti-immigration movement.

Suella Braverman became the third senior Conservative Party figure in less than a month to join Reform, led by Brexit figurehead Nigel Farage.

The leader of Britain’s Conservatives, Kemi Badenoch, expelled Robert Jenrick for “plotting in secret” to defect from and damage the party. He later confirmed he was joining Reform U.K.

The party confirmed Damien Kurek — who held the seat previously — would run in the Battle River-Crowfoot riding in the next election. Kurek gave up his seat last year so Poilievre could run in that electoral district.
