UK’s Conservative Party leader torpedoes defection of chief rival by firing him first
LONDON (AP) — Britain's Conservative Party, which governed the country from 2010 until it suffered its worst-ever electoral defeat two years ago, was plunged into fresh turmoil Thursday after its leader sacked the man widely seen as her greatest rival for apparently plotting to defect to a rival right-wing party.
Three former ministers from the Conservative Party have joined the far-right party in recent weeks, which currently leads in the polls. Since 2024, around 20 elected officials and former Tories have defected to the anti-immigration movement.

The party confirmed Damien Kurek — who held the seat previously — would run in the Battle River-Crowfoot riding in the next election. Kurek gave up his seat last year so Poilievre could run in that electoral district.
