Characters have different unlock methods in Mario Kart World. Some characters require you to win at a certain cup, whereas others are random unlocks from using the Kamek item in races. For the cups, you’ll need to play and complete the cup in the Grand Prix, it doesn’t matter if you place or not.

Costumes in Mario Kart World are unlocked by collecting and consuming Dash Foods, which are shiny yellow lunch bags found outside of food stalls run by Yoshis (shown below).

After more than 10 years of Mario Kart 8 dominating the market, Mario Kart World is here to shake up the series in a big way. As the name implies, Mario Kart World is set in an open world, which means there are a ton of changes that Mario Kart veterans need to be aware of.

Mario Kart World has introduced one mechanic that I was personally surprised to see, and that’s Dash Food. These are snacks – lovingly crafted and handed out by Yoshis across the map – that you can consume while racing or free-roaming for a quick boost, and with some luck, a new costume for the character you’re playing.
