The social media giant says the multibillion-dollar project will connect the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa and other regions.

Meta has announced plans to build a 50,000km (31,000 mile) sub-sea cable across the world. The tech giant said Project Waterworth - connecting the US, India, South Africa, Brazil and other regions - will be the world's longest underwater cable project when completed.

Enter Meta's mooted new internet cable, which is planned to be longer than the circumference of the Earth and up to four miles down into the sea. If that seems immediately counter-intuitive, such cables obviously don't just go in a straight line across the surface of the planet.
