Mike Rutenberg inherits a defense still mourning the loss of "beloved" Jim Schwartz, with Cleveland's success in 2026 potentially hinging on whether the first-time coordinator can win over the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns head coach, Todd Monken, hired Mike Rutenberg to replace Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator. Rutenberg was previously the passing-game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons defense. Rutenberg is familiar with the Browns defensive scheme and should not miss a beat in keeping the Browns very talented defense on track.
Rutenberg, 44, has over 15 years of NFL experience, beginning his coaching career with UCLA in 2006 before joining the NFL in 2003 as a player personnel intern in Washington.
Houston’s Cory Undlin shares a trait with four other candidates, has ties to HC Todd Monken and former DC Jim Schwartz.
